Program Overview

The Life Process Program© by Stanton Peele, PhD, JD

Exclusively offered at St. Gregory Retreat Centers™

Chapter/Week 1 - Assessment

Debriefing, detoxifying, orienting, and assessing at St. Gregory Retreat Center™ (SGRC).

Chapter/Week 2 - Values

Provides a working definition of addiction as occurring to an involvement because of the experiences it provides for people – which keys residents into thinking about what they seek and get from their addictions, and eventually how they will replace these feelings and experiences.

Value clarification – like everything we do in SGRC – is teacher-assisted, not taught. People have to plumb their own values for meaning, not be lectured about what they should care about (although values like family, being healthy, and God will regularly surface – even these should not be lectured).

Skill at communication - People must listen, participate, and try to tell the truth.

Chapter/Week 3 - Motivation

Need to re-examine motives for using and measure these anticipated benefits against what life actually brings them. Controlling negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones – a key ingredient in Cognitive Behavior Training (CBT).

Chapter/Week 4 - Resources

Residents, at this midway point are developing proactive attitudes, thinking about what they need to do to proceed in their lives and rehearsing the skills they will require to do so. They are also developing quite sophisticated helping skills themselves.

Chapter/Week 5 - Rewards

Extends in three ways: (1) assisting residents to visualize the rewards they will gain from an addiction-free life, (2) arming them with a behavioral tool – awareness of environment and the triggers for their addictions, (3) and training them in the critical skills of problem solving and assertiveness.

Chapter/Week 6 - Support

Family and social supports, for good and for ill. This means choosing social groups carefully, with a focus on the group’s importance for their addictions, always being aware of the power of families – of the need residents have to be loved.

Chapter/Week 7 - Maturity

Overall status as human beings - quality of residents’ lives, the contributions they make to those around them. “Responsibility” is a key term in this self-reflection, both as ignored in the past, and as a keystone for their futures.

Chapter/Week 8 - Greater Goals

This chapter focuses on the practical demands, both of emerging from SGRC, and going forward into the future. This extends from simple time management to planning medium and long-term goals – also addresses the most immediate and serious issue – relapse prevention.
